Joan Young Obituary
Joan Elizabeth Kidd Young

Columbia, SC

Joan Elizabeth Kidd Young, 85, died Friday, July 29, 2016. Born on December 18, 1930, in Eaton, Ohio, Joan was the daughter of Edison Kidd and Freda Green Kidd Ramsey. She was the loving wife of the late Reverend Dr. James L. Young.

Over the last year and a half, Joan bravely battled ALS, passing away peacefully at her home in the presence of loving family and friends.

She is survived by four children, J. David Young, Jennifer Young, Michael Young, Richard Young; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Young attended college at the Baptist Missionary Training School in Chicago, graduating in 1952. She earned a Masters of Social Work from Western Michigan University in 1979. Joan was a loving mother, devoted minister's wife, and a trusted friend. Through the years she worked as a truant officer in Rochester, NY, and directed a free preschool and after school program for children in downtown Battle Creek, Michigan. She was a Christian educator, a social worker in the Battle Creek Intermediate School District, and spent many years as a therapist at the non-profit Samaritan Counseling Center in East Lansing, Michigan, specializing in counseling children and families until her retirement in 1996.

Joan loved flower gardening, reading, learning, and spending time with family and friends. She was politically active in progressive causes throughout her life. She was very involved in her church and actively served her community. To the end, she was an amazing spirit, her family and her faith the central tenets in her life. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Shandon Presbyterian Church, with interment in Charleston on Wednesday. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
