John Young Obituary
Dr. John R. Young

Battle Creek

Dr. John Roger Young "Jerry", age 86, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family in Battle Creek on September 8, 2016.   Jerry was born in Detroit, MI on October 27, 1929, to the late Edward Theodore Young and Ruth Lemmon Young.  Jerry is survived by his sister, Jan (Richard) Erickson; his son, Sandro (Bridget) Young and his daughter, Roberta Young.  He also leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Maria Laura Bucarelli Young and her siblings, Daniela Bucarelli and Philippo Bucarelli, along with nieces, nephews and many others who considered him family.  Jerry was preceded by his brothers, Alan Young and David Young and his infant son, Giorgio.

Jerry was raised in Highland Park, MI attended Parker Elementary School and McKenzie High School.  From 1948-52, he attended the University of Michigan, School of Chemistry and graduated with a BSc in Chemistry.  While at U of M, he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity and maintained an ongoing relationship with his fraternity brothers throughout the years.  Jerry attended Wayne State University to intern with Dow Corning, decided chemistry was not his vocation, and applied to the University of Michigan Medical School.  Jerry graduated with his medical degree in 1956 and Interned at the Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, CA for one year.

Jerry was drafted into the Army, or in his terms he became "an obligated volunteer," and utilized his medical expertise to serve his country.  He was tapped to become a pilot and earned his wings as a Navy Flight Surgeon in Pensacola, FL.  Jerry found the dichotomy of being an Army Captain on a Naval Base let to many humorous encounters!  In 1958, Jerry was stationed with the SETAF (South European Task Force-affiliated to NATO), where he was the Commanding Officer of the medical unit in Verona, Italy.  During this tour of duty, he met Laura Bucarelli and they married in 1959 in Torino, Italy.

Jerry started his family medical practice in Battle Creek in 1961 and was a board certified family practitioner for over 45 years.  He had a long list of accreditations and achievements in those years.  Jerry was an aviation examiner for the Federal Aviation Agency, a member of the Academy of Family Practice and the American Medical Association, as well as a former President of the Calhoun County Medical Society.  He was the former Chief of Staff of the Community Hospital and Leila Hospital.  In 2014, Jerry was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Bronson Hospital.  Jerry was a life-long learner, an avid tennis player, fisherman, golfer, skier and an amazing dancer!  He enjoyed volunteering, supporting community activities and local charities such as Nurses Clinic and Habitat for Humanity.  After retiring in 2007, Jerry continued volunteering and supporting local charities.  A devoted family man and a diehard University of Michigan sports fan, Jerry was a compassionate, kind, caring and loving man who celebrated his life as well as the lives of others.  He provided support and love to all that knew him, including countless cats and dogs rescued by his family.  He will be missed, but God has a wonderful angel with Him.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 from Noon-2:00pm and 5:00pm-8:00pm at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes-Shaw Chapel.  A memorial service will be conducted by Reverend Ott on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 3:30 at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek.  In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Dr. John R. Young may be directed to these local organizations: Safe Place Shelter, Calhoun County Animal Shelter, or Companion Cats.  Friends may send condolences or share a memory at www.kempffuneralhomel.com Arrangements by Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes
