Kay Mead Obituary
Kay (Koenig) Mead

Kay (Koenig) Mead, age 73 of Marshall, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Bronson Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born Kay Dawn Ulrich on November 16, 1941.

Kay was the oldest of nine children. Cheryl (Hicks) Rickie (Bob Myers) Bobby (Ulrich), Pam (Bruce MacDonald), Darlene (Cliff Hall), Kathy (Randy Davis) Tim (Ulrich) and Jim (Ulrich).

Previously married to Don Koenig for 32 years, she was blessed with the following children, (grand- children) and ((great grandchildren)) - Doug and Lori (Corey((Ollie)), Kyle and Jake), Kevin and Todd, Michael and Kelley (Brady and Ally), Kristen and David (Alex, Taylor and Trevor). Beth Koenig preceded her in death.

In 1995, Kay married Doug Mead and embraced his children and (grand children) Ryan and Emily (Addison). Chelsea Mead preceded her in death.

Her professional career began as a cake box designer at Michigan Carton where she created designs for Jiffy and many other popular brands. Later, Kay began work at Peck's Drug Store where she met and was influenced by the late Marie Williamson. She joined Marie at Williamson's Gifts and Antiques as her buyer and designer.

In 1990, Kay created the well-known retail gift and gourmet foods store Serendipity and popularized the concept, "the art of finding unexpected treasures." She used Serendipity as the inspiration and platform of her creativity which was and continues to be a visual spectacle for many who come from far near and far. Her contributions to the retail and tourism communities in Marshall became a benchmark of customer experience and service. Her 24th business anniversary was November 19, 2014.

Kay was many things to many people. She was a mother and nurturer not only with her children but she took great passion in her love of gardening, which many enjoyed at her home at Lyon Lake. This proved to be an extension of her creativity into nature and making everything she touched beautiful.

She was an adventurer. Anyone who knew Kay was quickly overwhelmed by the schedule she kept. She was consistently on the go, working tirelessly at the store and traveling the world over enjoying some of her favorite places like Paris, Amalfi Coast and Prague.

Kay was a previous member of Marshall Presbyterian Church and West Eckford Missionary Church. She served as a Blue Bird Leader for many years with dear friend Judy Baker, and her fondest gatherings were monthly "Bunco" - where no dice were thrown but dear friends caught up with each other.

To pay tribute to "Fair Lady Serendipity," visitation will be held at the Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel on Sunday, November 23, 2014 from 4-8PM. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11AM on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the funeral home with Rev. Kris Tarkiewicz officiating. A luncheon will follow the memorial service immediately after in the Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall reception hall.
