L.E. Hammock Obituary
L.E. Hammock L.E. Hammock (Gramma, Gramma Ellie, Mom, Mama), 81, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 11, 2012. She had been ill for several months. L.E. was born on November 10, 1930 in Allred, Tennessee to parents Kirby and Bertha Cantrell, who preceded her in death. She married the love of her life, Jessie D. Hammock on July 16, 1949 and lived a very full and happy life with him until his death in June, 2004. L.E. and Jessie had six children together, Susan (Jay) Neve, Brenda (Bill) Hill, Joy (David) Dixon, Tony (Kathy) Hammock, Tina Cornell, and Timmy (Pam) Hammock. They have 12 grandchildren who they loved and encouraged in every way possible. They were so proud of all of them.: Cliff (Marilyn), Melissa, Heather (Justin), Ryan, Joshua (Erin), Jill, Megan (Chris), Shanna, Tyler, Megan, Alex and Nate. L.E. also has eleven great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Her great grandchildren love her dearly and gave her the name "Gramma Ellie". Going to Gramma Ellie's house for a cookout, picnic, visit or just to hang out was always an adventure. In addition to her children and grand children, L.E. is survived by brothers and sisters, Harold (Jean) Cantrell, Betty (Carl) Scott, and Ula Mae Hargis of Anderson, Indiana and Burns Harmon Cantrell of Nancy, Kentucky and multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by sisters, Susie Smith, Bessie Carr, and Ila Carr, brothers, Ross and Doyle Cantrell, all from Livingston, Tennessee, and a son-in-law, James A. Lessig of Battle Creek, MI. L.E. has many "honorary" family members including: Steve, Autumn and Austin Garvison, Eric Cornell, Ben Jones, Dawn Bond, Curt Ainsworth, and her little dog, Rosie. L.E. loved gardening, quilting, taking care of her chickens, reading the Bible and attending church. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, but also attended Calvary Baptist, First Wes, and Life in Christ Ministries with her children. She was most known for her cooking and generous spirit and people gathered in on a daily and weekly basis to have coffee with her and eat biscuits and gravy, pancakes with chocolate syrup, chicken & dumplings, garden vegetables and much more. She always provided a warm and caring home and everyone was welcomed with open arms. Inpromptu cookouts and get togethers were a weekly event, with birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve being the highlights of the year. L.E. loved traveling and made several trips out west with her husband, and family and traveled to Washington D.C., Seattle, Montana, and San Francisco. Jessie and L.E. also took a cruise with some of their children in 1999, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. She most loved her trips to Tennessee to see family and in recent years, she spent a week each summer with most of her children and grandchildren on a houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake. Another love was watching baseball and her Detroit Tigers. L.E. is deeply loved, admired, and honored by all of her children and grand children. She will be so desperately missed by all of us, but we will carry her in our heart and mind "forever and always to the moon and back until the numbers stop". We love you so much Mom/Gramma! Thank God for you, the wind beneath our Wings. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd. Battle Creek.
