Mary Jo Hawk, 71, of Gull Lake passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born August 10, 1943 in Muncie, Indiana the daughter of LD and Winifred (Stahl) Childs.  Following her graduation from Muncie-Burris High School, Mary Jo received her bachelors degree at Purdue University in both retailing and teaching. She then attended Butler University where she received a masters degree in guidance and counseling.  During her 23 years of marriage to Thomas J. Garling they adopted a daughter and a son, Angie and John.

Mary Jo is survived by her husband, Henry "Blake" Hawk of Gull Lake; children, Angie (Vin Rai) Garling of Berkeley, CA; and John (Kristin) Garling of Grand Haven, MI; grandchildren Nina and Asha Garling-Rai and Logan and Kendall Garling; three stepchildren and many step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Robert St. John in October 2002 as well as her parents.

Mary Jo worked all of her life in various fields, including teaching and as a real estate agent with Jaqua for the last 26 years.  She retired in August.  She was active in numerous organizations throughout her life.  She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at Purdue and took active roles in the Kalamazoo Rotary and Junior League of Kalamazoo, serving as president in 1984-85.  Pretty Lake Camp was very important to her.  Her concern for the well-being of others prompted her to start the Kalamazoo Poison Prevention Council when she moved to Kalamazoo in 1974 and led her to serve on the Portage School Board, to mentor high school students through Rotary and to support the Kalamazoo Literacy Council.  She always offered a kind word and a helping hand wherever she was.

A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, September 29, 2014, at noon at Gull Lake Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to  Pretty Lake Vacation Camp (9123 Q Ave, Mattawan, 49009);  Kalamazoo Literacy Council (420 E. Alcott St.,  49001); Family and Children Services (1608 Lake St., Kalamazoo, 49001); and  Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan (222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, 49007).
