Mary Penney Obituary
Mary Lou (O'Reilly) Penney

South Carolina

Mary Lou (O'Reilly)  Penney, 80 of South Carolina, (formally of Battle Creek) died Saturday, October 5th 2013

She was born to the late Basil E. and Margaret (Thiel) O'Reilly on June 26, 1933 in Battle Creek, MI.  Mary Lou graduated from St. Philip High School in 1950 and started her career in the mail room then moved on to a receptionist at the Kellogg Company.   She then married the late William E. "Bill" Penney, Jr. in 1960, and they lived together in Battle Creek until she relocated to North Augusta, South Carolina in 2011.

Mary Lou was a dedicated wife, mother and sister.  She volunteered her time and talent to many.  She was a volunteer for many years in the "Work Room" at St. Joseph Elementary along with room mom for her children and artist for many of the teachers.  She also worked for Wolverine Cablevision in the office and at Senior Oil Inc. alongside her husband.  She than devoted her entire life, along with Bill taking care of their son Mike who was stricken at a young age.  Her daughter and son-in-law gave her three beautiful grandchildren whom she loved and adored and spoiled rotten.  For many years she dedicated her time and talents to parishioners of St. Joseph who were sick or in the nursing homes.  She knitted many slippers and donated them along with handmade nut cups with candy at Christmas time.  She also loved to bowl and played for years with friends in bowling leagues at Nottke's Bowl.

And then there were her sisters.  The "O'Reilly girls".    Shirley Steinbacher, (who we just lost in July of this year), Kitty Ludwa and Pat O'Reilly.  They did everything together.  If they weren't all occupying the back row at church on Saturday night, they were out gallivanting in some antique store.  How they loved to look for a bargain. And then of course something to eat and ice cream later.  They have all remained close throughout their lives and taught us how important family is to each other.  Making sure we all get together to celebrate holidays, birthdays and special occasions.  Spending weekends at the lake all piled in a small little cottage but wouldn't have it any other way! All these memorable times that will always remain precious, happy, never to be forgotten memories that always brings a smile to our faces and joy in our hearts.

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband Bill Penney, parents, Basil and Margaret O'Reilly, sister, Shirley Steinbacher and brother, Kenneth O'Reilly. She is survived by her son, Michael Penney, of Aiken, South Carolina, daughter, Tina (Penney), son-in-law, Duane, and three grandchildren, Drew, Brady, and Alexis Dunbar all from Evans, Georgia.  Sisters, Kathleen "Kitty" Ludwa and Patricia "Pat" O'Reilly of Battle Creek and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Monday, October 14th from 5-8pm.  The rosary will be recited in the funeral home chapel Monday evening at 7pm. A funeral  Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 15th at 10:30am.  Burial will immediately follow after mass at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the or St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Visit Mary Lou's web page at www.bachmanhebble.com.
