Norma Ailene Freed

Fleming Island, FL

Norma Ailene Freed, a former resident of Allegro, a senior living facility located on Fleming Island, Florida died Tuesday the 18th of November at Allegro in hospice care.

Born in 1928 in Dayton, Ohio, Ailene started her work career for the Duriron company in Dayton and met her husband, Jacob Bressler Freed who was a World War II Navy veteran and an engineer with the company.  In 1962, Jacob took a position with Union Pump Company in Battle Creek where they lived until 1987.  During this time, Ailene Freed was active in the P.E.O. organization in Battle Creek, as a volunteer at the Cheff center in Augusta, Michigan, as well as, "The Ladies of the Lake" organization of Gull Lake, Ladies Guild at the Congregational Church in Battle Creek and she was on the Board of the Battle Creek Symphony orchestra.

In 1987 upon Jake's retirement as President and CEO of Union Pump Company they moved to Charlotte, NC. and Spruce Pine, NC.  She was very active in the Carmel Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC and GrassyCreek Presbyterian Church in Spruce Pine.  She was active in the choir, music programs and Bible study as well as International travel with the Charlotte church.  Ailene was a great decorator of homes and liked to move frequently.  Jake and Ailene moved back to Michigan a year before his death. She later moved again to Charlotte, NC, and then onto Fleming Island, FL where she remained until her passing.

Her love of friends and family, her remarkable sense of humor, her caring for those less fortunate and her volunteer activities will be greatly missed.

She is survived by a daughter, Lori Lane of Fleming Island, FL and a son, Kenneth Freed, of Kalamazoo, MI as well as three grandchildren, Lydia Lane, Kirk Lane and Jacob Freed who brought her great joy in her later years.  She also had a great great grandchild, named Jacob Leo Freed II.

There will be a memorial service in Charlotte at the Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Rd.
