Norman Leeser Obituary
Norman Clark Leeser

Battle Creek

Norman Clark Leeser, 91 of Battle Creek died at his residence with his family and Grace Hospice to comfort him and be at his side.

He was born October 3, 1923 in Bellevue, Michigan to Gilford and Ilah Mae (Pember) Leeser.  Norm grew up in Bellevue and graduated from Bellevue High School, where he played football, basketball and was a member of the Library Staff.  He attended Cleary College in Ypsilanti and then after Pearl Harbor enlisted with the U.S. Navy.  He served during WWII on a base on Canton Island in the Pacific Theatre.  After returning to the States, he studied Tactical Military Procedures at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  After the service he returned to Bellevue, and worked for the former Duplex Printing Press Company until it closed.  He retired in 1984 after 33 years at Post Cereal Division of Kraft General Foods as an equipment purchasing agent.

Norm married the former Barbara Green on October 26, 1947.  He and Barbara had four children: Steven, Jacqueline, Terry and Tina.

Barbara passed away on January 17, 1968.  In February 1970, Norman married Laura Fenn Parrott.  Norm and Laura renovated a historic centennial farmhouse.

Laura preceded him in death on September 5, 2007.  Surviving are his children, Susan (Erwin) O'Dell of Kodak, TN, Jane (Richard) Zischke of Livonia, Steve (Brenda) Leeser of Hudsonville, Daniel (Patricia) Parrott of Battle Creek, Jackie (David) Baker of St. Joseph, Terry (Peggy Day) Leeser of Franklin, Tina (Gary) Gruner of Madras, OR; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three  brothers, Russell Leeser of Littleton, CO, Robert Leeser of Charlotte,  and Wayne Leeser of Whittemore.  A special friend, Eleanor Cope also survives.  In addition to his two wives, Norm was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Mayfield Doisy and a stepson, Warren Parrott.

Norm served on the board of Convis Union United Methodist, served on the Advisory Committee for Pennfield Schools, was past president of the Pennfield Band Boosters, served as an election official, worked with the Calhoun County Farm Bureau, was active with Boy Scout Troop #74 and was a member of Post 25 Year Club.  He converted a school bus into a mobile library for Pennfield children.

Norm enjoyed working on the farmstead as well as hunting on the property.  He was an excellent woodworker and very mechanically inclined. Norm was also an avid golfer and shot his age at many courses.  He hit a hole-in-one in Charlotte when he was 88.  One of the great joys of his life was to take his little grandchildren upon his lap and play.  It was magical to watch him charm even the tired, fussy children.  He continued to take a great interest in his grandchildren's success right through college.

Special thanks go to the staff of Arcadia Home Health Care for their attention to Norm during the past year.  Nurses and aides cared for him like he was their own father.

Friends may call 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.  The funeral service to celebrate Norm's life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 31, 2014 at Convis Union United Methodist Church, where U.S. Navy Military Honors will be bestowed.  Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue, MI.
