Norman Washburn Obituary
Norman Edward "Pete" Washburn

Ellis Corners

Norman Edward "Pete" Washburn, 80, of Ellis Corners, Fredonia Township, died on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Pete was born on March 2, 1934, in Marengo Township to John Albert and Margaret (Conrad) Washburn.  He attended Ellis Corners School and Marshall Schools.  He served in the United States Army for two years and was honorably discharged in 1957.  In 1963 he married Betty Byers-Boehmer in Marshall at the Brooks United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death in 1968.  For the past 30 years Pete spent time traveling, farming and caring for the love of his life Shirley Combs.  She preceded him in death on December 28, 2012.

Pete worked for several years at the Marshall Elevator.  The Yellow Transit Company had a hub in Marshall at that time and was hiring. A friend told him to apply.  They hired him and he started working on the docks. After 30 years he retired as a truck driver in 1995 out of the Jackson office of Yellow Freight. Pete was a member of the Calhoun County Farm Bureau and the Marshall Moose Lodge #676.

Pete was a life long farmer in Ellis Corners,  Fredonia Township area.  Pete enjoyed the outdoors and would always be seen out on his tractor or out back in the woods cutting trees.  He enjoyed traveling to different restaurants in Tekonsha and Marshall to catch up on all of the latest neighborhood farm stories or going to the Copper Bar for hot dogs on Thursday.  He was an avid woodworker and would make about any type of cut out with his jig saw. Pete will be remembered as a strong, caring and giving man and will be missed by anyone who ever came in contact with him.

He is survived by his caregiver nephews, Steven (Teresa) Washburn and Daniel (Karen Buys) Washburn all of Ellis Corners; sister, Earline Washburn of Marshall, Shirley's sons, Randy (Kathy) Combs, and Rick (Linda) Combs all of Marshall; and nieces and nephews Cathy Martz, Becky Devenney, Liz Durr, Lori Slocum, Charlie Washburn and Ken Washburn.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty; special companion Shirley Combs, brothers, infant James Douglas in 1940, Charles Elmer in 1982, and David Earl in 2007; and a nephew John Washburn in 2010.

Visitation will take place at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel 723 US 27 North, Marshall on Monday December 8, 2014 from 2-8pm with family present to greet friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.  Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Craig Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel with Reverend James Codde and Pete's neighbor Mrs. Diane Inman officiating.  Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery.  Family will gather with friends following the committal service at the Kempf Funeral Home Reception Hall for Pete's favorite lunch of soup and sandwich.  Leave a personal message for the family and sign the online guest book at www.kempffuneralhome.com
