Robert C. Austin Battle Creek Robert Clair Austin, 90, of Battle Creek, died January 13, 2013 at home. He was born April 9, 1922, the son of Clair and Naomi (Romans) Austin in Albion. During Robert's 21 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant he served during World War II and in Korea and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He also worked for the Grand Trunk railroad for 14 years and for the Albion Recorder for two years. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (McBride) Austin of Battle Creek; son, Larry Austin of Albion; daughter, Judy Austin of Harlan, Iowa; stepchildren, John (Stacey) Burt of Gaylord, Laurie (David) Bush of Greenfield, Indiana; seven grandchildren and sister, Bernadine Pesonen of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, two brothers and one sister. Robert was a member of the V.F.W. of Albion and umpired high school baseball for many years. He enjoyed playing golf, bridge and traveling and was an avid sports fan. A committal service with military honors will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Fort Custer National Cemetery with Pastor Josh Hydrick, 20th Street Church of Christ, officiating.
