Russell R. Sholes Russell R. Sholes passed away July 30 at Casa de La Luz Hospice Center in Tucson, Arizona. He was born in Rockford, Illinois on July 14, 1927 to Sadie L. and Kenneth F. Sholes. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Russ was retired from the Battle Creek Police Department, where he served as captain at different times of all three divisions (Investigations, Patrol, and Records), as well as from Union Pump Company, where he served as Security Manager. Russ also was an active member in the Battle Creek Host Lions Club, having once served as President. He was a devout fan of University of Michigan Athletics, as a football season ticket holder and member of the Victors Club for several decades. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary L. (Bowers) Sholes; sons, Bruce of Tucson, Arizona and Robert of Battle Creek; five granddaughters, Megan (John) Benchley, Brittany, Lindsey, and Alyia Sholes; a grandson, Aden Sholes; several nieces and nephews including very special niece, Dawn Hawks. Russ was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth and Donald Sholes. His cremains will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Memorial Park Cemetery where a later private memorial service will be held in the chapel.
