Ruth F. Barnes

Battle Creek

Ruth Virginia (Fidler) Barnes passed away Sunday, May 25th, 2014 at Evergreen Senior Care and Rehab Center in Battle Creek, MI.  She was born August 8, 1919 in Fort Lauderdale, FL to Anola Schlarp Fidler and John Howard Fidler.

Ruth graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1937 and attended Stetson College in DeLand, FL and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.  She married Louis Alston Barnes of Chattanooga, TN on September 5, 1939 and the couple lived in the Akron, Ohio area for most of their married years.  Louis died in 1985 and Ruth eventually moved to Lakeview Meadows Apartments in Battle Creek in 1999.

Throughout her life she continued to embrace all those she knew with her charm and grace and joyful spirit.  During their retirement and prior to Lou's death they maintained a Florida condominium for their winters in Ruth's original home city of Fort Lauderdale, FL.  The couple had many friends and were avid bridge players which Ruth continued in her years after Lou's death.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek.

Survivors include two daughters, Sue Ann (Dave) Eddy of Battle Creek and Elizabeth "Betsy" (James, deceased) Swanson of Cincinnati, OH.  Her grandchildren: Jennifer (Jay) Henry of Coldwater, MI; David McCarville of Kalamazoo, MI; M. Kathryn McCarville of Seattle, WA, and step grandchildren Donald Eddy of Dowling, MI;  Susan (Denis) Smith of Hastings, MI; and David V. (Jill) Eddy of Charlotte, MI; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Per her wishes cremation has taken place. Her cremated remains will be inurned with her husband's in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.  It is suggested that those who wish to make a memorial donation might consider Life Span Continu-Care at 166 E. Goodale Avenue, Battle Creek, MI 49037; St. Joseph Catholic Church Legion of Mary at 61 No. 24th Street, Battle Creek 49015; or the Dave and Sue Eddy Community Fund at the Battle Creek Community Foundation at 34 West Jackson Street, Suite 1, Battle Creek 49017, in memory of Ruth F.
