Ruth M. Hildebrand Battle Creek Mrs. Ruth M. (Underwood) Hildebrand, 96, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, June 20, 2012 at home of natural causes. She was born to Edward and Margaret (Kee) Underwood on April 16, 1916 in Newberry, MI. Ruth earned both a BS in Education and an MS in English from Western Michigan. She worked for the Kellogg Foundation and later taught at both the High School and College levels. On November 8, 1941 Ruth married Edward H. Hildebrand and together they raised four daughters on their 104-acre pony farm. She had a lifelong passion for reading, writing and especially for swimming. She was the oldest woman to swim the Goguac Lake marathon. She won many swimming competitions including a world relay record and numerous gold medals. Above all Ruth loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a devoted lifelong Christian and a blessing to many. A service was held at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday and she will be laid to rest at Ft. Custer in late August. Please contact Jane Edwards for additional details. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ann Ruthsdottir of Brunswick, ME, Mary (Tom Vieyra) McGann of Battle Creek, Martha (Paul) Baker of Lakeland, FL, Jane (Jim Ingersoll) Edwards-Ingersoll of Augusta; grandchildren, Dawn (Bill Blue) Parker, Stacey (Bob) Lowe, Peggy (Jamie) Girard, Chad Baker, Jennifer (Chris) Sleeper and 15 great-grandchildren.
