Sam was born in Gladwin, Michigan to Jesse and Rose Underwood, graduated from Allegan High School and Ferris State College.  He was currently employed at Consumers Energy in Fleet Services and previously retired from the City of Battle Creek Equipment Center.

Sam spent many years in the auto industry where he developed an extreme wealth of knowledge which added to his interest in custom cars and historical trucks.  He belonged to many organizations such as the Michigan Trucking Association, the Historical Truck Association, the American Motorcycle Association, ABATE and others.

Sam was a strong advocate for gun rights, Right to Life, and the U.S. Constitution.  He was a board member of the Calhoun County Tea Party.  In addition, he was a Patron Member of the NRA and belonged to many gun rights organizations.  He was a true Patriot.

He spent many years with the North South Skirmish Association participating in War Between the States artillery reenactments and competition.

Sam was an avid reader of political and historical books.  His strong beliefs and convictions touched many lives throughout the years.  He was happiest in the past 10 years of his life inheriting a readymade family which included beloved grandchildren and a dog, Roxie.  Surprisingly, he enjoyed feeding birds, humming birds and deer.

Sam is survived by his wife, Toni; Stepsons, Todd (Julie) Edgerton of Park City, Utah and Nick Fritz II of Battle Creek; Stepdaughter, Stephanie (Tim) Stemaly of Battle Creek; Grandchildren, Michael Todd Edgerton of Park City, Utah and Sarah and Caleb Stemaly of Battle Creek.  Also surviving are Nieces, Vicki (Paul) Knuckles and Julie (Tino) Reyes and their children, Elijah, Elicia, Nathan, Abbegail, Rose and Aly.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Fran Raab of Allegan, and good friend, Tom Adams of Breckenridge, Michigan.

Sam was an awesome person with integrity and good moral character.  He was one of a kind.  He was dearly loved by his family whom he cherished each and every day.  He will be truly missed.

The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home this evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Knuckles of Allegan Christian Center. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
