Teresita H. Gebhard

Battle Creek,

Teresita H. "Terrie" Gebhard, 71, of Battle Creek, passed away, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Bronson Hospital. Terrie was born on March 28, 1944, in Iloilo City, Philippines, the daughter of Agustin and Lourdes (Quema) Hallares. Terrie met her future husband William M. "Bill" Gebhard, at a beach party while he was serving in the Peace Corps in the Philippines. Terrie and Bill were married on September 20, 1969 in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. The new family came to the United States in December of 1971 and settled in Benton Harbor. Terrie proudly became a United States citizen on the Bicentennial, July 4, 1976. Terrie was a firm believer in education and loved being a teacher. She taught 6th grade in the Philippines for eight years and was a teacher with the Benton Harbor Public Schools for 13 years and Kalamazoo Public Schools for three years. Always striving to do the best for her students, she received her Master's Degree in Education, while teaching full-time. She retired from full-time teaching in 2006 but because of her love for her students, she continued substitute teaching for Battle Creek Public Schools for an additional three years. Terrie enjoyed tending to her beautiful garden and loved dancing. She danced with a local Philippine Folkloric Dance Troop. They performed at many festivals and events in the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo area. Terrie was member of the local Philippine American Association (PAASM) where she held numerous offices. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and will always be remembered as a woman of strong faith. She was fiercely dedicated and supportive of her beloved family and was a great friend to all.

Terrie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill, as well as her children Christina Kneitz of Chicago, John (Krista) Gebhard of Portage and Melissa (Ricky) Allegretti of Westmont, IL and her grandson Marcus Kneitz. Terrie is also survived by her brother Patricio Hallares of Iloilo, Philippines and her sister Marialuna Rosales of Molo, Philippines and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Hernando and Vicente.

A celebration of her life will be from 4:00pm to 8:00pm Sunday at Royal Funeral Home with a Rosary recitation beginning at 7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am, Monday, June 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Amyloidosis Foundation (www.amyloidosis.org) or the Calhoun County Humane Society (www.calhouncountyhumanesociety.org).
