Verna E. Stockford, 96,  passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Bronson Battle Creek with her family by her side. She was born December 26, 1918 in Muskegon, the daughter of Charles and Esther (McCormick) Pett. She graduated in 1936 from Kalamazoo Central High School, from Western Michigan in 1941 with a Bachelor in Early Elementary and received her Master's Degree from Western Michigan in 1964. She married the late Lawrence Stockford on June 27, 1942 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Verna taught elementary school in 1941 in Hickory Corners, was a substitute teacher while raising her family and then later taught for 16 years at Roosevelt Elementary, retiring in 1976 from Battle Creek Public Schools. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She had taught Sunday School, served as President of United Methodist Women, and as a leader and Vice President of the Esther Circle. Verna was a life member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and had been a Camp Fire leader and Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 304. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society and member of the Battle Creek Camera Club. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, reading, camping, and working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Marita) Stockford of Bandon, OR, David (Sharon) Stockford of Kalkaska, MI, and Pat (Don) Mayo of Battle Creek; sister, Helen Aagaard; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Phyllis Hall, Ruth Huyck, and Jean Olson.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 12:00 PM at the Christ United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Ross Township, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to Christ United Methodist Church.
