Athens

Vivian Arabella Irons, 81,  passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 at home. She was born September 30, 1932 in Burlington Township, the daughter of Vern and Loie (Allwardt) Converse.  Vivian graduated from Athens High School in 1949 where she enjoyed spending her time as a cheerleader and playing basketball.

She was a giving person and donated many hours of her time to various organizations, including 4-H, Campfire and Cub Scout Leaders, Athens Community Association, AA Riders Horse Club and New Idea Club of Athens.  Vivian was a long- standing member of the First Congregational Church of Athens where she sang in the choir.  She loved to quilt, sew, crochet, knit and read. Vivian had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed spending her time snowmobiling, fishing, traveling and camping.

She is survived by her children; Stephen (Nora) Irons, Barbara Korn and Michael (Melissa) Irons, all of Athens; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Arla Clemence. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George R. Irons in 2010, brothers, Burl, Aurice and Milford Converse; sisters, Thelma Savage and Martha Roberts, and son in law, Kenneth Korn.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 5 until 8:00 p.m. at Shaw Funeral Home, 2838 Capital Avenue, S.W. Funeral Services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the funeral home with Pastor Marvin Savola officiating.  Interment, Burr Oak Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the Athens Community Foundation.The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home.www.shawfuneralhome.com
