Walter Lee Gilbert, 89, of Battle Creek passed away Monday, September 15, 2014 at Evergreen Senior Care and Rehabilitation.

He was born December 4, 1924 in Appleton, AR the son of Samuel R. and Templa (Howard) Gilbert.  Walter proudly served in the United State Navy during World War II stationed on the USS Detroit. He was a member of the American Legion Post 298, F & AM #12, Battle Creek Shrine Mini 500 Club, Brother of the Locomotive Engineers, Moose Lodge - Luzerne, Michigan. Walter enjoyed golfing and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Kellogg) LaForce Gilbert; children, Larry (Linda) Gilbert of Battle Creek, Lillian (Tim) Carie of Ocala, FL, Laura (Danny) Webb of Battle Creek and Deborah (Scott Johnson) Spoelstra of Chelsea, MI; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; several step grand and great grandchildren.  Walter was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Lucille (Spurlin) Gilbert in 1990, his parents; brother, J.B. Gilbert; sisters, Edna Whitecotton and Adlie Barlow.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Shaw Funeral Home, 2838 Capital Avenue, S.W.  Funeral Services will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2014 at Battle Creek Friends Church, 1305 Olive Street with Pastor Kelly Hadlich officiating.  Interment, Christian Memorial Gardens, Rochester, Michigan.
