Vedna Jo "Grandma Jo" Loyer

Battle Creek

Vedna Jo "Grandma Jo" Loyer, age 73,  died early Tuesday morning, June 17, 2014 at the Eaton Community Palliative Care in Charlotte after a short illness.

Vedna, who was called Jo by all who knew her, was born on June 26, 1940 to Elmer and Gertrude (Walkinhood) Lawrence in their Marshall home.  Jo worked at Corning Glass Company in Albion until marrying the love of her life, Lester O. Loyer on September 19, 1959 in Marshall.  Together they made a wonderful life and started a family right away.  After their children were all in school, Jo started work in the lunchroom at Marshall High School the very year it was built.  During her 38 years there, she made friends with co-workers and three generations of students.  She was a friend to everyone she met especially "her Kids" at the school.  They knew she was truly interested in them and they felt comfortable confiding in her and trusting her advice.  After retirement two years ago, she couldn't go anywhere without running in her friends.

Jo was a member of the Convis Union United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed flower gardening and was an avid reader.  A favorite pastime of Jo's was shopping at Goodwill and would often spend hours searching for the perfect bargain.  She is remembered as loving mother and grandmother.  Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she was very involved in their lives.  Jo had a real zest for life, with a humorous and feisty personality.

She is survived by a daughter, Starr (Nick) Cady; son, Lester E. (Carrie) Loyer; grandchildren, Crystal (Jason) Lane, Tonya Cady, James (Jenny) Loyer, Lester Jared (Jen) Loyer, Amanda (Tyler) Ward and Brittany Loyer and 11 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by a special niece and best friend, Sandy DesCastecker of Moline, IL

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Gertrude Lawrence; husband, Lester; sons, Barton O. Loyer (2000) and Brett L. Loyer (2001); a grandson, Isaiah Neeley; sisters, Judy Lawrence, Lorna Conley, Barbara Bishop, Deloris Boyer, Leatha Sanders and Terry Spurgettis; and brothers, Armond Lawrence, Elmer Lawrence Jr., Lewis Lawrence, John Lawrence, Stanley Lawrence, Robert Lawrence and Richard Lawrence.

The family will receive friends on Thursday at the Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Home, 723 Old US 27 North, Marshall from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM.  A funeral service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held 1:30 PM Friday, June 20, 2014 at the funeral home with Reverend Sueann Hagan officiating.  Interment will follow in Porter Cemetery. The family will gather with friends following the committal service at the Convis Township Hall.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Eaton Community Palliative Care.  Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
