The Rev. James A. Carey, Age 84 Of Battle Creek went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 24, 2014. James was born on June 1, 1930, in Corry, Pennsylvania, the son of George D. and Alta M. (Mayhood) Carey. He was a graduate of Monroe High School in 1949 and then graduated with a Master's degree from South Western Bible Institute in Waxahachie, Texas in 1952. He furthered his education at Western Michigan University studying psychology. He became an ordained minister in 1956 and pastored in Hastings and Battle Creek. On December 17, 1954, he was united in marriage to the former Sylvia C. Lickfeldt who survives. Jim sang and traveled professionally for 7 years and was minister of music in Lansing in 1956. He was a member of the Battle Creek Exchange Club, Ministerial Association, Chief Chaplain of Care Community and Chaplain at Leila Hospital for 20 years, member of Lakeview Lions Club, Ordained Minister in the American Baptist Church, a member of the First Baptist Church and was the current Pastor at Custer Chapel. He enjoyed music, conversing with people, gardening and games.
Surviving are children, Brian Carey of Battle Creek, Sheila May Harvey of Bellevue, Lisa Kay Carey of Battle Creek and Dollie Renee Cain of Whitehall, MI; 6 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7:00 p.m., at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the funeral home with The Rev.
