Virgie E. "Bert" Swafford Battle Creek Virgie "Bert" Elizabeth (Herrell) Swafford, 88, of Battle Creek, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loved ones, November 15, 2012. She was born March 4, 1924, the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Sims) Herrell in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. Virgie worked at Kellogg's and retired after 39 years of service. Virgie was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Tom Swafford in 1999; one grandson, Joseph Cipcic and her many brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Mary (Jack) Carmicheal, Betty Burns, Shirley (Stan) Polak, Bill (Cindy) Swafford, Jim (Dixie) Swafford, Sue (Steve) Bray, Rodger Swafford; 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and several step grandchildren. Virgie attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She was a loving, generous (and feisty) person who was loved by many and will be missed greatly by all who knew her. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Monday, November 19, 2012 at Shaw Funeral Home where services will take place at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Robert Mayo officiating.
