William B. Comai, M.D. Battle Creek William Bartley "Bill" Comai, M.D., 76, of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Bronson Battle Creek. Dr. Comai was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1936 to Mildred (Bucholz) and William C. Comai. He graduated from Detroit's Redford High School in 1954 and Albion College in 1958. Dr. Comai earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1961 and completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Dr. Comai was a practicing surgeon for four decades. He joined Dr. Amos and Dr. Huntington in private practice in 1968 and was later joined by Dr. Morgan. In 1992 Dr. Comai's son, William J. Comai, D.O., joined the practice. He had served as Chief of Staff at both Battle Creek Health System and Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center (SRRC) and was a hospital trustee when Leila and Community Hospital merged in 1988. He and Barbara were recipients of the Dale G. Griffin Health Care Leadership Award in 2008 and Dr. Comai was inducted into the Bronson Battle Creek Physician Hall of Fame in 2012. He was a past president of the Calhoun County Medical Society. He had served on the Calhoun County Department of Human Services Board, Board of Trustees for the Southwest Rehabilitation Foundation and board member of the Kingman Museum of Natural History. He was a passionate Detroit Tiger baseball and University of Michigan football fan. He was devoted to his family, including his 10 grandchildren. He was an accomplished gardener, hunter and fisherman. Dr. Comai was often heard to say, "Keep your rod tip up" and "keep your powder dry." Dr. Comai is survived by his wife of 52 years Barbara; sons, William J. Comai, D.O. (Kerri), of Battle Creek, Andrew Comai (Gretchen) of Ann Arbor; daughters, Stephanie Comai (Tim Sowton) of Ann Arbor and Lauren Comai Hornberger (George) of Saline; ten grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Comai of Pleasant Ridge and Geraldine Yates of Westland; and brother, Douglas Comai of Augusta. The family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00, Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Shaw Funeral Home. Services, 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2013 at the funeral home. Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials go to Calhoun County Medical Care Facility or Kingman Museum.
