Dr. Robert J. Anderson

Dr. Robert J. Anderson, age 95, a former local Optometrist, died peacefully, July 3, 2013 at Clare Bridge.  He was born April 15, 1918 in Battle Creek, to Oscar K. and Marguerite (Kennedy) Anderson.  Dr. Anderson was a 1936 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School.  Following graduation from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, he joined as an associate in the practice of Dr. A. W. Moore in Muskegon for a three year period.  Robert was married to Ethelyn M Hubbell in Muskegon on September 29, 1945.  His solo optometric practice began in June 1944 in the former Wolverine Tower and later moved in 1956 to a professional building on West Van Buren, with attorney, Roger Nielson and dentist, Dr. Philip DeSico.  Robert was joined in practice in 1974 by his son, Dr. Ronald J. Anderson until Robert's retirement in 1982.  Robert and Evie retired to Port Charlotte, Florida where he pursued his passion for golf, woodworking and photography.  A summer home was maintained on Missaukee Lake, Lake City until 1993.  Robert was a life member of both the Michigan Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.  A member of First Congregational Church, a former member and ex-president of Marywood Country Club, prior member of the Battle Creek Country Club, Kingsway Country Club and Elks Lodge, both of Port Charlotte, FL. 

Robert is survived by a daughter, M. Lynne (Robert) Bennett, a son, Dr. Ronald (Sherry) Anderson, both of Battle Creek, a brother, William R. Anderson, granddaughters, Anitra Townsend, Allison Roelofs, Taryn Vitale, Ricque Pekara and five great grandchildren, and a nephew, David Anderson.  He was preceded in death by his parents in 1978 and his wife of 65 years, Etherlyn in January of 2013 and two great grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.  www.bachmanhebble.com.
