Alice Hedlund Obituary
Alice Hedlund, 75

Alice Teena Grusing was born in Hilbre, Manitoba, Canada, on January 17th, 1941, to Rev. Herman and Teena Grusing, the "perfect number 7" of 12 children. Her first 9 years of school were completed at the local one-room school house. In Alice's words, "the most important thing" in her life happened during one summer camp when she prayed, "Lord Jesus, I'm not sure if I'm a Christian or not, but I want to make sure, so I'll ask now ask you to come into my heart."

Grades 10-12 were taken in Western Grove, Arkansas, where her father was pastoring Yardelle chapel. Along with her sister Faye, she excelled in basketball despite having never played the game before. Her greatest love, however, was Bible study, and she took great personal responsibility for her spiritual life and service.

Alice studied for one year at Winnipeg Bible Institute and continued her theological education with 3 more years at Prairie Bible Institute, graduating in 1963, followed by a year of Nurse's Aide training, as well as a Summer Institute of Linguistics. Plans changed as Alice felt led to answer an ad to care for children in South Dakota, where she eventually met Earl Hedlund, a missionary amongst the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. They were married on January 1st, 1966, and together they faithfully served the Lakota for 29 years. Along with their four children, many others also found a loving and safe home with the Hedlund's. Alice invested in the lives of countless people who considered her a mother and mentor.

After leaving Pine Ridge in 1995, they enjoyed a short sabbatical in Fresno, California, where Alice received her Master's degree in Church Ministry, from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. In 1997, the couple arrived in Diamond City, Arkansas, where they took up residence as pastors of the Lighthouse Bible Church. Alice was again involved in leading women's Bible Studies and Children's ministries. Alice never knew a stranger and loved to meet people, always with a desire to share her faith. She enjoyed the ladies' exercise class and Monday night Pickin' n' Grinnin'! She was the Ping-Pong champ wherever she went, and loved to play games, especially Scrabble! With so many circles of involvement, she will indeed be dearly missed by many.

Alice is survived by 3 children: Jon Hedlund of Chicago, IL, Lois (and Nagieb) Abdelmelek of Cairo, Egypt, Esther (and Shawn) Lowery of Pocola, OK; Daughter-in-Law Codie Hedlund of Visalia, CA; step daughter, Marylou (and Neil) Porter of The Dells, OR; and 14 grandchildren; 3 greatgrandchildren; and 7 siblings: John Grusing, Helen Colie, Betty Smith, Bud Grusing, Esther Hunter, Phyllis Haywood, Marye Poitras .

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earl; step daughter, Ruth; son, Joel; and four siblings, Dave Grusing, Frank Grusing, Bill Grusing, Faye Reader.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, 16th of July, at the Lighthouse Bible Church, Diamond City, AR. Alice has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Gideons International or the Lighthouse Bible Church, 101 East Elm, Lead Hill, AR 72644.
