Charles W. Hancock, Sr., 86

Charles W. Hancock, Sr., age 86, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Home.

He was born September 17, 1926, in Granite City, Illinois, to Ruth and Norman Hancock, Sr. He married Rose Marie Hluzek on July 28, 1956, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Charles was an avid fisherman who loved Bull Shoals Lake. He was owner and operator of the Fin and Feather resort in Oakland, Arkansas from 1967-1979. Prior to his move to Oakland he served in the U.S. Navy, was a master jeweler for several well-known jewelers in the St. Louis area, including KAY Jewelers. Charles ventured into owning his own restaurants. After several years he bought Kentucky Fried Chicken stores in Fenton and St. Genevieve, Missouri. Charles missed the resort that kept him busy and eventually needed something to do besides fishing, so from 1984-1996 he worked for the Mountain Home schools as a custodian at the kindergarten and Nelson Wilkes Herron elementary school. He loved the smiling faces of those children and became well-known to them and the teachers as "Mr. Chuck". He retired from the school system in 1996.

Charles is survived by his loving wife Rose Marie of 56 years; three sons: Charles W. Hancock, Jr. and wife Kim and Norman Paul Hancock and wife Christy: all of Mountain Home; and Gary Hancock of Lombard, Illinois; a daughter: Karen Marie Hancock and husband John Thompson of Mountain Home; six grandchildren: Tara Hancock Rowland, Megan Hancock Denton, Bryant Hancock, Nickolas Hancock, and Elizabeth Hancock: all of Mountain Home; and Brian Hancock of Lombard, Illinois; one great-grandson: Hayden Rowland. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Norman Hancock, Sr.; brothers: Delman and Norman Hancock, Jr., sister: Melba Summers and one granddaughter: Rebecca Marie Hancock.
