Esther Ann LeGate Obituary
Esther Ann LeGate, 82

March 23, 1929 - August 30, 2011

Esther died peacefully at her home after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 82. She was surrounded by family and her constant companion, Buddy.

Esther was born to Mary Ann (Provazni) and Stephen Verba in Binghamton, New York. She was the younger of two daughters. She moved to Coalinga, CA when she was ten years old. There she attended and graduated from Coalinga High School, class of 1947. She worked at the Sugarbowl while in high school where she met her future husband, Richard LeGate. They married September 3, 1947. Richard attended San Francisco State University. For the next three years, they lived in the Haight-Ashbury District where she worked to support herself and Richard. They returned to Coalinga over the summer months, where her first two children, John and Sheri, were born. They then moved to Sanger, on to Los Gatos, and finally settling in Campbell where they stayed raising their family of five children for the next 44 years.

A stay at home mom for eighteen years, Esther took night classes to brush up her secretarial skills and went back to work for Santa Clara Mental Health Department. She loved her job and was especially good with the Dictaphone. She retired after twenty-three years.

In 1999, Richard and Esther retired to Mountain Home, Arkansas. They enjoyed living there for the next 10 years, until Richard's death in 2009. Esther then moved back to Carson City, NV, where she lived with her daughter, and then on to Ramona, CA where she spent the last of her life with her son and his wife.

A kind and thoughtful person, she was happiest if she could get you something to eat. She was strong willed - and insisted on paying for everything. She loved her church and was a devout Catholic. She tried to never miss a weekly mass. Esther was a full-blooded Czechoslovakian and we'll forever hear her "yeschi schmadia".

She is survived by her 5 children - son John and wife Beverly of Ramona, CA, daughter Sheri of Carson City, NV, daughter Susan and husband Dan of Boulder Creek, CA, son Patrick and wife Beth of Santa Cruz, CA, and son Michael and wife Linda of Newman, CA.

She also leaves ten grandchildren (Aaron, Stacey, Justin, TJ, Sarah, Andrea, Carly, Wendy, Katie, Bridgette) and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia Henry, and her husband of almost 62 years Richard LeGate.

A Mass of Christian burial will tentatively take place Sept. 17, 10:00 am, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 637 Sunset St. Coalinga, CA. Interment will immediately follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Coalinga, CA.
