James D. "Jim" Matthews Obituary
James D. "Jim" Matthews, 67

James D. "Jim" Matthews, 67, a resident of Gassville passed away Friday, December 9, 2011, at the Baxter Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 24, 1943, at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. Jim served as a medic in the United States Navy during Vietnam and worked in a field hospital in Vietnam from 1965-1966. After completion of his military service he was hired at the Baxter Regional Medical Center as a lab tech, where he stayed until moving to the Cheney-Snow Clinic, working there for the next ten years. At that point he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was accepted as a police officer with the Mountain Home Police Department, where he retired after 25 years of service. During his career as a police officer, Jim was very interested in crime prevention and established numerous programs before they were popular elsewhere, such as the neighborhood watch, safety for children, even shoplifting detection. He married Pearl Jane Klock in Mountain Home on December 13, 1985. Jim was a very proud member of the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma, a northeastern tribe of Native Americans.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Pearl Matthews of Gassville; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Mark Gwatney of Rogers, Arkansas; a sister and her husband, Anne and J.C. Roper of Wyandotte, Oklahoma and two grandchildren, Zachary and Kelsea.

Arrangements are private and under the direction of Conner-Hankins Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Wyandotte Indian Tribe, 64700 East Highway 60, Wyandotte, Oklahoma 74370
