Jean Vail Obituary
Jean Vail, 91

Jean (Jeanette) Lee Vail passed into the hands of the Lord on January 22, 2016, at Arbor Place at the Meth-Wick retirement community located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was 91 years old.

She was born in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, on May 31, 1924, to Julius Mikkel and Mina (Trones) Lee. Jean grew up in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. On December 11, 1943, she married the late Thomas Andrew Vail, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Their happy marriage ended after 56 ½ years with Tom's death on June 12, 2000.

Jean worked for the federal government for 31 years and retired in 1977 after 25 years as a College Relations Officer for the Social Security Administration in Chicago.

Jean was a fun loving person with an optimistic attitude. Her idea of fun always involved being with other people. She and Tom loved music and dancing. They were devout symphony orchestra patrons for over 20 years. They lived in Franklin Park, Illinois, for over 30 years and after retirement moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, in 1979. In late 2011, Jean's health required that she relocate to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to be close to family.

While in Arkansas, Jean was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as an active member of the Alter Guild from 1980 to 2006. Jean was past president of the Redeemer Alter Guild; past president of the Elk's Ladies; past president and past Legislative Officer for Chapter 674, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), and was a member of Ladies of the Moose.

She is survived by one son, Michael Thomas Vail; his wife, Marilee, and a granddaughter, Melissa, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas; her brother Elvin Lee; and her sisters, Albertine Schankey, Myrtle Manders (Dietz), Helen Meek, and Marie Stephens.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls, Wisconsin on Saturday April 30, 2016, at 10:00AM.

Memorials may be made to Arbor Place at the Meth-Wick Community, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
