Prentice Jackson Custer, Sr., 91

CDR Prentice Jackson Custer, Sr., USN Retired, age 91, of Elizabeth, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Baxter Regional Medical Center. He was born August 6, 1922, in Viola, Arkansas to Byron H. and Frances (Bush) Custer. One of the youngest members of the select group of Navy "mustangs," he served in WWII as an enlisted pilot, continuing on to have a distinguished career in the Navy he loved. During that time he married Lorene Cummerland, and, later, Kathryn Johnson of Pensacola, Florida, with whom he had five children. After retiring in Hawaii, Jack married his beloved wife Gerd Danielson in 1976. Together they moved to the mainland and spent many years exploring North America in their motor home. Ultimately settling on Lake Norfork in his ancestral region of Arkansas, Jack and Gerd quickly became an indispensable part of their community, befriending and helping one and all. Dearly beloved of family and community, he remained until his death a warm and loving man of honor and great dignity.

CDR Custer is survived by his wife, Gerd Custer, of Elizabeth, Arkansas; his son, Prentice Jackson Custer, Jr., and children Leihua, Karla and Kelly Custer; his daughter Kuon Custer Hunt, and children David Hart and Wendi Kuon and granddaughter Makana; his daughter Kittee Custer, and daughters Rebecca Custer Allen and Guinevere Kate Chastain; the children of his son Michael Steven Custer (deceased): Mike, Jr., Jason, Dawn, Adam, Nick, and Jack, their mother Stacy Marie Custer and granddaughters Faith and Cidney. He was predeseased by his son Rockford Allen Custer.

He is also survived by his brother Byron (Sam) Custer, and daughter Claire; his sister Mickey Elmore, and daughters Sherri (deceased) and Cami, as well as his sister, K Yarosh.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the Hand Cove Volunteer Fire Department.
