Shirley Valena Obituary
Shirley Valentine Hurt, 68

Shirley Valentine Hurt, 68, of Mountain Home/Jonesboro, died October 16, 2012 at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro following a long and valiant battle against leukemia. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a devoted friend.

She was born February 19, 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky, but later moved with her family to Dallas, Texas where she graduated from Highland Park High School in 1963. She then attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Shirley was married to Rodger Hurt, Sr. on June 27, 1964, and they made their home in Jonesboro until retiring to Mountain Home in 2005.

She was active in many community activities as well as a devoted member of First United Methodist Churches in both Jonesboro and Mountain Home. She gave of herself by participating in many volunteer activities and was an avid Razorback fan, golfer, gourmet cook, and travel enthusiast-especially long, extended trips to Destin, Florida. She also dearly loved the time she spent on Lake Norfork, and reading or knitting in her favorite chair.

Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the true loves of her life and she was never happier than when she was able to be with them or to do things for them. The cookie baking sessions with the grandchildren at Christmas were something she looked forward to and participated in with great joy and enthusiasm each year, creating memories that will last a lifetime for all involved. Watching her grandchildren develop into fine, outstanding, accomplished young men and women filled her with pride and joy.

Shirley was a vibrant personality who radiated good cheer and seldom met a person she did not like. Her laughter could fill a room and people from all walks of life gravitated toward her because of her warmth and ability to make them feel truly welcome in her presence. She remained positive and optimistic even during the darkest days of her battle with leukemia. Only five minutes after being told that she would not survive the disease, she said she would make a beautiful angel and those who knew and loved her would not disagree.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Rodger Hurt, Sr.,; two sons, Rodger Hurt, Jr. and his wife, Betty Ann, and Jay Hurt and his wife, Fayeth, and a daughter, Ellen Gray Hurt, all of Jonesboro; her precious grandchildren, Rodger Hurt, III, Peyton Hurt, Evan Hurt, Grace Hurt, and Seth Hurt, all of Jonesboro. She is also survived by her sister, Holly Valentine Thomas and her brother, James T. Valentine, both of Dallas; her brothers-in-law, William B. Hurt, III and Porter Hurt of Jonesboro and a number of nieces and nephews; in addition to countless friends whose lives she touched in so many ways.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 19, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Miles II officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers are Nancy Melton, Barbara Rankin, Sherry Grisham, Martha Gregory, Shelia Jansen, Pat McCaughan, Philip Launius, Bud Melton, Tommy Rankin, Jack Gregory, Martha Sanford, Sue Larson, Martha Lynn Hurt, Jay Melton, and Pard Pryor.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home.
