Sonya Harriet Smith, 77

Sonya Harriet Smith, age 77, of Lakeview, Arkansas passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011 at her residence. She was born December 1, 1933 in Viroqua, Wisconsin to Charles R. and Regina (Lake) Smith.

Ms. Smith was a 1951 graduate of Viroqua High School. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1957 with a Bachelor Degree of Nursing and became the Supervising County Nurse for Columbia County, Wisconsin. In 1969, she received a Public Health Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota and was employed as Director of Visiting Nurses Service of Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, followed by Director of Personal Health care in Dayton, Ohio. In 1977, she returned to Wisconsin to become Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and Marion College, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She owned and operated the Colonial Cheese House, Omro, Wisconsin from 1982 to 1989. She continued her nursing career at Wewahitchka Maximum Security Prison as the Supervising Nurse. Her retirement years were spent in Gainesville, Missouri, and Lakeview, Arkansas, where she enjoyed her favorite pastime of quilting. She was a member of the Hill & Hollow Quilt Guild, Bias Bunch and The Renegades. Ms. Smith is survived by a sister: Joan Davig and husband Elling of Viroqua, Wisconsin, a brother: Dr. Larry Smith and wife Ardis of Lodi, Wisconsin, nieces: Kirsten Benidt and husband Glenn, Dr. Sarah Smith and husband Mike Mathews and Betsy Mejia, two great nieces, two great nephews and a great-great nephew.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 at Twin Lakes Cremation Society & Funeral Home in Bull Shoals, Arkansas with Dr. Sarah Smith and Joe Mason officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Twin Lakes Cremation Society & Funeral Home.
