William Nelson Cantwell, 89

William Nelson Cantwell, age 89, of Gassville, Arkansas, passed away July 22, 2012, at his residence on the Cantwell family farm which had been in Mr. Cantwell's family for many years.

He was born January 7, 1923, in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, to Ernest William and Ellen Brownie Gosnell Cantwell. Mr. Cantwell was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a Prisoner of War. He received the Purple Heart and P.O.W. medal. He and the former Dawn C. Thomas were married on October 16, 1964 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mr. Cantwell worked as a mechanical engineer for Douglas Aircraft. He designed portions of the Saturn V Booster Rocket and portions of the hydraulics system of the lunar command module of the Apollo missions. He was a member of the Douglas Retirees and Ozark VFW Post #3246.

Survivors are his wife, Dawn C. Cantwell: of the home; two sons: Houston (Christine) Cantwell: Gassville and Martin T. (Sammie) Vinson: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements by Twin Lakes Cremation Society and Funeral Home will be private. Memorials may be made to Juvenile Services Host Home Program.
