Carl Thomas Burrill

ORLAND - Carl Thomas Burrill, 54, died March 25, 2012, at home. Carl was born July 27, 1957, in Bangor, the son of Richard Hyde and Janice Marie (Maddocks) Burrill. He was educated in Bucksport schools and graduated in 1975 from Bucksport High School, where he was very active in Golden Buck's football, reliving the memories over and over again. He attended the University of Maine at Machias, and then later graduated in nursing from Georgia Tech. Carl worked as a licensed practical nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens, Ga. While in Athens, Ga., he developed a close friendship and working relationship with Henry "Coot" Smith and his wife, Sybil, and remained there for 25 years, returning to Maine first to care for his mother and later for his father. Carl lived life "out loud," had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and loved to share it with all who would listen. He was a unique man who was especially appreciated by those who loved him most and knew him best. Carl was the dreamer of the family who contemplated everything from living in a tree house in Maine to living underground in a van. He often scanned Mother Earth News to support his various schemes. He loved nature, spending hours landscaping his father's house in Glenburn, feeding the birds and driving off the dreaded chipmunks. For several years Carl was the youngest of the Burrill children, so he was ecstatic when Eddie came along to take over that role. They became lifelong close friends and he lived with Ed since their father's death in 2009. Carl is survived by his son, Mark; brothers, Timothy and his wife, Linda, of Penobscot, Dana and his wife, Shelly, of Northfield and Edward of Orland; two sisters, Molly Poole and her husband, Glenn, of Orrington and Susan Bennett and her husband, Mark, of Bucksport; as well as his Georgia family, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Peter. There will be a graveside memorial service, which will be announced later this spring, at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport, officiated by Damon Hayward, pastor of First Church of the Nazarene.
