Schluntz, Betty Jane Vincent - Beaumont
1934 - 2014 Betty Jane Vincent Schluntz, 80, of Beaumont, peacefully passed away and joined the Lord on December 16, 2014. Abiding by her wishes, Betty passed on to Glory while in her home, surrounded by the love of her family and grandpups. Intellectual, vivacious and focused, Betty was salutatorian of Lafayette High School and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute and Lamar University. After marriage to Harold Schluntz, her church sweetheart and high school valedictorian, the couple traveled with the United States Air Force and Mobil Oil; then settled in Beaumont, Texas, to raise their two daughters. An accomplished vocalist and pianist, she sang lead soprano solos in holiday cantatas, weddings and musicals. Purpose driven, positive and compassionate, Betty was a dedicated Christian and lead a host of children's, youth and musical ministries. Betty faced life's challenges with grace, resilience and the unsurpassable power of prayer. To be without Betty's presence, her comforting words of wisdom, gentle encouragement and share the spirit of joy she had for others, is our grievous loss. However, our heartbreak is pacified in the unshakeable truth that she is with our Savior and our God. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Nancy Angell and Carolyn St. Clair, of Houston; sisters, Darrelyn Broussard of Couer d' Alene, Idaho, Glenda Elliott of Fort Worth, Texas, and Karen Verrett of Broussard, Louisiana; brothers, Oran Vincent, Calvin Vincent, Jr., John Wayne Vincent, and Donnie Ray Vincent, all of Lafayette, Louisiana; and an impressive group of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty years, Harold Schluntz; grandson, Landon Angell; son-in-law, Don Angell; her sister, Gale Jennings; and her parents, Zoe and Calvin Vincent. May her blessed soul rest in peace as she sings soprano with the heavenly angels and is reunited with her new and perfect body. A gathering of Mrs. Schluntz's family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Her graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m., at Lafayette Memorial Park, 2111 West Pinhook Road, Lafayette, Louisiana. Complete and updated information may be found at: broussards1889.com .

Simien, Luwesta Ann "Lou" (Carter) - Pflugerville
1945 - 2014 Luwesta Lou Ann (Carter) Simien, age 69 of Austin, TX, battled for over thirty-years with rheumatoid arthritis. She ultimately lost her courageous fight, on Sunday, December 14, 2014. Although her disease caused severe damage to her body, her faith in God remained undiminished. She is survived by her mother, Cecilia Carter of Beaumont, TX; her brother, William James Carter of Port Arthur, TX; three children, H. James Simien of Memphis, TN, Debra Milton of Killeen, TX, and Therry Simien of Austin, TX; her sister-in-law, Eva Carter; her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Simien; her son-in-law, Robert Milton; her niece, Tiffany Carter; her three grandchildren, Marreon Simien, Ashley Simien and Christopher Taylor; and great grand daughter, Elizabeth Grace Simien. Born in Beaumont, on October 25, 1945, to Willie and Cecilia Carter, Lou attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and Church then Lamar University after graduating high school in 1963. After relocating to Baytown, TX with her family, Lou worked various jobs such as teaching music in the Goose Creek Independent School District and for many years at Montgomery Ward's, also in Baytown. As her health began to decline, she became bedridden, and relocated to Austin to live with her daughters. Over a two year period, Lou worked to first graduate to a wheelchair, then to a quad-walker and finally to a cane. Lou became bed bound two more times in her life, each time relearning how to walk so that she could continue to assist her brother, James, in the care of their elderly mother. Lou's daily display of resilience, determination, and unshakeable faith in God was both deeply moving to witness, and inspirational. Her life was an illustration of one very important lesson: Each day your will can get you up for one more day, to work one more day, to breathe one more day and to love one more day. Her family was her proudest accomplishment and she was determined that they would be her lasting legacy. We will always love her and her memory will continually remind us that though the body may fail, the spirit is everlasting. A wake will be held in Pflugerville, TX on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home at 9:00AM and funeral services will be held at 11:30AM at Church of the Living Waters, Round Rock, TX. Sudela, Mary Catherine
1923 - 2014 Mary Catherine Sudela, 91, of Monroe, Louisiana, formerly of Nederland, died Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Christus St. Joseph's Home, Monroe, Louisiana. She was born on January 13, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to John J. Berlier and Bertha Catherine (Huey) Berlier. Reared in a devout Catholic family, Mary was indoctrinated into the values of church, family, and service. She served in the Nurse's Aides Corp of the American National Red Cross during the height of World War II. She also served in the USO, where she met her future husband, Joe Sudela, who was serving in the Army. Although Mary claims that she was not initially interested in Joe, his persistence and charm eventually won her over. Joe and Mary were married on May 16, 1946, and celebrated 52 years of marriage before Joe's passing in 1999. After moving to Joe's hometown of Galveston, they took the passage of Genesis 1:28 seriously, in which God offers the instruction to be fertile and multiply. Seven of their nine children were born in Galveston, and two were born after their move to Nederland in 1961. All nine of Mary's children were not only instructed on the values of church, family, and service, but they were able to witness Mary's example through her involvement in the St. Charles parish community. She regularly served as a Eucharistic Minister and a Lector during Mass. She was also a dedicated member of the Altar Society where she participated in several activities including cleaning the church, serving on committees, and baking uncountable cakes, pies, cookies, and popcorn balls. She also brought Holy Communion to those that were unable to attend Mass. Family members remember the home cooked meals that began with a prayer, the assignment of chores around the house, and her amazing productions for birthdays and holidays; especially the food and desserts at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She managed the Sudela household, and being a master seamstress, she sewed many of the clothes that her children wore. She later moved to St. Joseph's Home in Monroe, Louisiana, where she continued to attend daily Mass, arriving early to pray the Rosary. She made an impact on her fellow St. Joseph residents; participating in many activities including regular rounds of bingo and dominoes. She was proud to introduce her many children to the St. Joseph's residents during their visits. Survivors include five daughters; Barbara Ann Thompson of Monroe, Louisiana, Rose Guilbeau of Houston, Betty Butler of Austin, Peggy Bateman of Houston, and Debbie McCown of Cypress, Texas; and four sons, Robert Sudela of San Marcos, Bill Sudela of Houston, Tim Sudela of Beaumont, and John Sudela of Hull. Survivors also include numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Rosary for Mrs. Sudela will be recited at 5:00 PM, with a gathering of her family and friends to follow until 7:30 PM, Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Broussard's, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 211 Hardy Avenue, Nederland, with interment to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Sudela's memory to Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, 2780 Eastex Freeway, Beaumont, Texas 77703 or to Wellspring Alliance for Family and Children, 1515 Jackson Street, Monroe, Louisiana 71202.
