Hazel Ann Hamlin 1940-2015 Hazel Ann Hamlin was born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California on December 14, 1940 to parents Sam and Ann Martindale. She grew up in Spring Valley, California, a suburb of San Diego. On her first day of the 9th grade she met the love of her life, Larry Hamlin. She and Larry graduated high school together in June of 1958 and were married in September of the same year. Their marriage produced three daughters - Lori, Dana and Jill. For 21 years Hazel enjoyed her role as mother and housewife while Larry worked for the Woolworth Company. In 1979, in Beaumont, Texas, they purchased the Al Cook Nursery and established the Hamlin Nursery and Company. They worked jointly in this business for 23 years, retiring in 2002. In 2009, they built their lake home and moved to Beaver Island on Lake LBJ. Hazel, with Larry always by her side, courageously fought the disease ALS for three years. She passed away on November 15, 2015. In addition to Larry, Hazel is survived by her three daughters, 4 granddaughters, 6 great-grandchildren, brothers Gary Martindale, Sam Martindale, Paul Martindale and sister Cheryl Martindale. She is also survived by Larry's siblings, Donald Hamlin and Evelyn Lee. Beautiful Hazel I met through my parents, Jay and Susie Poth, who long ago started the tailgate fun at The University of Texas football games. Her welcoming smile was a highlight for me each season, shining among the crowd as the gang rallied for the Longhorns and swapped stories. She will be missed by many of her fans. My heart goes to her family.

Larry, Thank you for the opportunity to visit you and Hazel last year. I am glad my wife and son had the chance to meet you and her and to know Hazel's beautiful smile in spite of her fight with ALS. Prayers are all we have left to offer you and the assurance that your angel has joined God in her rightful heavenly place.

Dearest Hazel. How many times did Larry and I laugh at the thought of you calling in to the radio station at KLVI on Friday mornings to do your live commercials for Al Cook. Then, one day you did it and we as well as listeners alike marveled at how you talked about plants, flowers, shrubs and everything green. You became a weekend fixture on the show. Your personality, coupled with Larry's made a great time for all. Many gardens today, smile because of the thoughtful care you put in to your work as well as the great marriage you two shared. What a meaningful time in my life that we all shared with you.

Lori and family, my heart is with you every minute ! I just looked at all these lovely life photos and enjoyed seeing the love for life that your Mom had ! You look just like her :) As you know I felt like I knew your Mom even though I never met her in person. To be married to the love of her life all these years wow.. who can say that these days? I love you and all your family that I have enjoyed getting to know all these years since we have been working together. You are a life friend and I am sending you all a warm hearing hug now. Jill,
So sorry for your loss. Words can not soothe or heal any ache so big, only faith & time. May you & your family find help in the healing.

Dear Larry,
Just this week, I was looking at a letter that I had sent to Hazel for her Walk to Emmaus. I mentioned how proud she should be of all that the two of you had accomplished together as well as the love and respect that you have earned from your friends, family and peers. In that letter, I expressed my appreciation that God was preparing us for whatever life might have in store. I often think of an email that you sent to me after Hazel's illness in which you said, "odd as it may seem, I feel prepared and consider it a privilage to be able to take care of Hazel"
I will always remember Hazel for her generous nature, her loving heart and that beautiful smile that she always had on her face. I have so many fond memories of her that will live in my heart forever. I agree with my son Mitch's comment that .. "I think Hazel is an ANGEL, who is now up in heaven looking down and smiling at all of us.". I can only say ... "thank you sweet Hazel, for being one of the best friends I have ever known. I look forward to the day that we can be together again. .... Roger Mayes
