Alton James Borel Sr., 87, of Port Arthur passed away January 3, 2013 at Christus St. Mary hospital, Port Arthur. He was born on August 17, 1925 in New Iberia, LA to Jacque Joseph and Antoinette Borel. Alton and his family moved to St. Martinville, LA in 1927 where he graduated from St. Martinville High School in 1942 at the age of 16. He assisted in the coordination and planning of his high school reunion in recent years. Alton served in the Army Air Corp from December, 1943 until his honorable discharge in January, 1946 as a Sergeant in the 20th Air Force. Alton married Mary Alice Durand, the love of his life, on May 17, 1944. Alton and Mary moved to Texas where Alton initially pursued a career in automobile body work. Alton started his 38 year career at DuPont, Orange, TX in September of 1948. His survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Alice Borel, and his 6 children: Alton Borel, Jr. and wife Linda of Taylor Landing, TX, John Borel and wife Cathie of New Port, MN, Alice Moore and husband Jerry of Port Neches, Ann Duchamp and husband Glynn of Port Arthur, Gail Freeman and husband Gary of Nederland, and Judy Nesbitt of Nederland. He is a Paw Paw to 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Alton was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and blessed their lives in so many ways. He was always there for his family. His true hobby was his family for it was his greatest passion. His family knew him as a fix-it man as he could repair anything. He provided the examples of strong work ethics, the importance of education, and the love of family. A gathering of his family and friends will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a vigil at 6:00 p.m. at Gammier-Oberle Funeral Home, Port Arthur. The family will also receive friends Monday January 7, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. At 12:30 p.m. the procession will begin from the funeral home to St. James Church for the mass at 1:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church in Port Arthur with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves.
