Betty Gillespie Woods, 83, of Kirbyville, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012. Betty was born on March 15, 1929, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Lucille Tillery and William Sidney Bill Gillespie , and has been a resident of Kirbyville for almost 80 years. Betty graduated from Kirbyville High School in 1946 and then attended Sam Houston Teachers College and graduated in 1951, with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Home Economics. After graduation, Betty worked as a Home Demonstration Agent for the Texas A&M system, not knowing how well these skills would come in handy in future years. She married Hyram Prentice H.P. Woods on September 14, 1952, and they were then blessed to have five wonderful children. Soon after the death of her husband, Betty began working for Kirbyville ISD as a homebound instructor. Betty had many fond memories of her years working with homebound children, many of whom kept in touch with her because of the profound impact she had on their lives. Several years prior to her retirement in 1996, Betty transitioned into the Special Education department, where again, her skills of compassion and patience made her an excellent fit to help educate children with special needs. Betty was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, (an honor society for women educators), and was proud to continue, after retirement, as a life-member. Betty was a devoted mother to her five children and in her free time also enjoyed oil painting, sewing, reading, cooking, and was an avid collector of cookbooks. Her most enjoyable moments were spending quality time with her family, her proudest accomplishment. Betty is survived by her children, Michael Woods of SugarLand, Paul Woods and his wife, Becky of Kirbyville, Laura Woods Rigano and her husband, Joseph of Houston, Wayne Woods and his wife, Michelle of Dallas, and David Woods of Monroe, Louisiana; grandchildren, Amy Woods, Christy Woods, Morgan Woods, Madison Woods, Julia Woods, Hudson Prentice Woods, and Gina Rigano; sister, Faye Webb and brother-in-law, Ben of Shreveport, Louisiana; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Prentice Woods; her parents Lucille and Bill Gillespie; her sister, Billie Kelly; and her daughter-in-law, Marie Parker Woods, wife of Michael Woods. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Peggy Smith for her loving care and devotion to their mother. She never thought of Peggy as just her caretaker, but as a true friend and companion. Services will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 1:00 p.m., at Kirbyville United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., at Adams EE Stringer Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Barry Boyette, Donald Chapman, Ronald Chapman, Greg Ellis, Tim Landrum, and Steve Smith. Honorary pallbearers, Ben Webb and Seborn Woods. If desired, memorials can be made in lieu of flowers, to Kirbyville United Methodist Church, 105 West Main Street, Kirbyville, Texas 75956, or to the Methodist Children's Home, 1111 Herring Avenue, Waco, Texas 76708.
