1929 - 2015 Bettye Ruth Smith passed away on January 08, 2015, at Herman Memorial Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. She was born on April 21, 1929 in Beaumont, Texas to Dr. Joseph Willie and Elmira Armstrong Smith. Bettye grew up in Beaumont and graduated from Charlton Pollard High School. After high school Bettye attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas; Howard University in Washington, D.C. and graduated from West Virginia State University. She later earned her Master of Education Degree from The University of Southern California and a Doctor of Education. Bettye taught in Beaumont Independent School District, Enterprise School District in Los Angeles, California and retired as an Employee Representative for California Teachers' Association. She served as member of the Compton Unified School District Board and as president of the board in 1973. Along with being an educator, she was a youth advocate and politically active in the local community of Compton, California and her hometown of Beaumont. A member of Our Mother of Mercy Church, she was active in This Ladies Sodality, St. Peter Calver Ladies Auxiliary Court #64, a perish lecturer, and member of the Gospel Choir. Bettye is survived by one son Robert Joseph Smith; daughter Yolanda Fonteno Getwood (Melvin); three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Mercy Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 13, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Lowell Case, S.S.J., officiating. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at 9:30a .m. with a rosary beginning at 10:15 a.m. Burial will follow the funeral service at Live Oak Memorial Park under the direction of Hannah Funeral Home, Inc. Port Arthur, Texas.
