Gladys Ruth Whitmire Baggett, 66 of Spring, Texas passed away March 4, 2013. A native of Beaumont and graduate of Lamar University, she was considered a leading public school educator, primarily in Special Education for 37 years. Gladys was a former Special Education Department Chair for Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, taught in both the Beaumont and Lumberton school districts and received several outstanding teacher awards during her career. A woman of impeccable taste, she was a gifted vocalist and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. Preceeding her in death are her parents, Tucker and Novie Whitmire Cones. She is survived by her husband, Larry Baggett of Spring, sister Carolyn McLemore of The Woodlands, sister-in-law Linda McLemore and husband Marc of Beaumont; children Jeremy and wife, Rachel Byrom of Beaumont, Julie and wife Beth Byrom-Moran of Little Rock, AR and Joshua Byrom of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Joseph, Breanna and Zoe Byrom of Beaumont. Nieces and nephews, Tracie Brooks, Jill Piazza, Dustin McLemore, Charlie Walker and Alicia Roam. Visitation will be Thursday, March 7th from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. at Brookside Funeral Home - Champions at 3410 FM 1960 in Houston, TX; a reception will be held on Friday, March 8th from 11:00 - Noon at Calder Baptist Church, 1005 North 11th Street with a graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Due to Gladys' love of students, the Gladys Baggett Fund for Special Kids at Oak Ridge High School has been established to help special needs students attend prom and pay for other school expenses. Donations can be mailed to Oak Ridge High School, 27330 Oak Ridge School Road, Conroe, TX 77385. She will be dearly missed by many.
