Jeromy D. Hughes, 42, of Austin, formerly of Beaumont and Houston, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin after a three month illness. He was born on March 3, 1971, in Beaumont, to Linda Clark Hughes and Thomas Hughes. Jeromy owned and operated his own law firm, Jeromy D. Hughes & Associates, PLLC. Jeromy graduated from Hamshire-Fannett High School in 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major in History and Government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. While in college, he had the distinction of serving as an Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms at the Texas House of Representatives under then Rep. Mark Stiles. After graduation, he enrolled at South Texas College of Law where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1998. Jeromy started his legal career at Brown Sims, P.C. in Houston, becoming the fastest person to become a shareholder in the firm's history. He was a brilliant legal writer, litigator, mentor, and friend. He moved to Austin in 2009 to open his own firm and devoted the last years of his practice to helping those in need, earning entry into the State Bar of Texas Pro Bono College. Jeromy was well respected by his peers, earning an A/V Peer Review Rating from Martindale Hubble (the highest rating available) and being named a Texas Super Lawyer in 2012 - 2013 and a Texas Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2007-2011. Survivors include his father, Thomas Hughes and his wife, Brenda, of Crystal Beach; mother, Linda Clark of Corpus Christi; brother, Jason Hughes and his wife, Anna, of Beaumont; sister, Jennifer Beitel and her husband, Jim, of San Diego, California; step-sister, Candy Wappler of Abilene and step-brother, Danny Dunnam of Fannett; nieces and nephews, Max, Miles, and Claire Beitel, Sydney Jagneaux, and Jayden Dunnam. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Max and Evelyn Clark of Fannett and Curtis and Nadine Hughes of Beaumont. A gathering of Mr. Hughes' family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 7, 2014, at Broussard's, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont. Complete and updated information may be found
