Laverne Yeargan Martin Guess was born in Abilene, Texas, on September 25, 1916, the daughter of John Wise Yeargan and Maude Robertson Yeargan. Her older brother, John Lynn Yeargan, preceded her in death. A graduate of Abilene High School, she received a Bachelor's of Science degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1938 and married James Oliver Martin in her parent's home later that year. In 1940, they moved to Fort Worth, where she was employed as a bookkeeper and secretary for various businesses. They joined Broadway Baptist Church in 1940 and were actively involved with their children there and with numerous music organizations. Jim Martin died in 1970. She ended her career with 25 years as a legal secretary with the law firm headed by M. Hendricks Brown. She retired in 1981 and married William C. Guess of Beaumont, Texas, and was married to him for 18 years. During her time in Beaumont, she enjoyed being a member of the Guess family and loved and was loved by all of Bill's daughters and their families. She also served as a volunteer for many years at Baptist Hospital. She moved to Denton in 2001 and enjoyed a new circle of friends at Good Samaritan, Dogwood Estates, and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. She died on October 10th, 2012, at her home in Denton. Survivors include her son, Morris Martin and his wife, Elaine of Denton; daughter, Kaylon Martin Hall of Midland; grandchildren, Jennifer Martin Dingler and her husband, Brian of Arlington, Anthony Martin and his wife, Holly of Richardson, Bryan Hall of Mansfield, Lisa and Jimmy Hall of Midland; great-grandchildren are Matthew, Jonathan, and Mark Dingler, Allison and Emily Martin, and Catherine Hall. She is also survived by Bill Guess's daughters, Pat Guess Duncan (husband Neil), of Beaumont, Linda Guess Landreth (husband Tommy) of Galveston, and Becky Guess of Houston. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, October 15, 2012, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Denton, 300 W. Oak, Denton, TX.
