Lelan Woods, 85, of Beaumont, died Sunday, September 15, 2013. He was born in Malakoff, Texas, on January 24, 1928, to Hattie and Noah Woods. Lelan was the youngest of six children. At the age of twelve he met the love of his life, Jimmie Brittain. They married on July 3, 1947, while he was serving as a corporal in the Air Force. He went on to work as a switchman on the Southern Pacific Railroad and was a proud member of the United Transportation Union. Much of his joy in life came from spending time with Jimmie, whether it was a trip in the motor home, performing in local theater, or their favorite, a night out dancing. Later, when she became ill, he devoted himself to caring for her until her death in 2007. Surviving relatives include his daughter, Lisa Hunter; granddaughters, Emma Hunter and Lauren Johnsen and her husband, Chris, and their children; sister, Ernestine Goldstucker; and brother- in-law, Robert Brittain. He is preceded in death by his twin brother, Leamon; brothers, Thurman and Therrall; sister, Jean; grandson, Keith; and his beloved wife, Jimmie. A gathering of Mr. Woods' family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Broussard's, with interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont.
