1923 - 2016 Myra Jean Giffin, a longtime resident of Newton, Texas, died on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Rosewood Assisted Living Facility in Newton. Jean was born in Orange, Texas, on July 14, 1923. This summer she would have celebrated her 93rd birthday. Her family moved to Newton when she was very young, and she graduated from Newton High School. After training in Business School, she joined the U.S. Air Corp and served during World War II. When she returned to Newton, she went to work for the First National Bank of Newton where she worked as a cashier and in the note department. She retired from the bank after 45 years of service. Jean was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, and she served as the church treasurer for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her mother and dad, Albert and Bonnie Smith, two brothers, Walter and John Smith and niece Sue Smith Brooks. Jean is survived by a sister, Betty Fillyaw of Newton; and two sisters-in-law, Verna Smith and Wanda Smith of Newton. She never had children, but she had 10 nieces and nephews who adored her. Jean loved her Lord, her family, her church, and travel was her passion. Family visitation for Jean will be on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Her memorial service will be at the First Baptist Church of Newton on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. Burial is under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Newton.
