1943 - 2016 Dr. Phillip G. Malnassy-teacher, botanist, photographer, artist, musician, poet, son, brother, father, friend - passed away on November 21, 2016 in Austin, TX. Phillip was born in New York, NY on October 20, 1943. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University and then moved to Beaumont as botanist for the biology department at Lamar University. He had a distinguished career as a professor there for over 25 years, including the award for Teacher of the Year. He was also closely involved with the Big Thicket National Preserve, volunteering there and conducting tours and seminars for many years. Phillip is survived by his son Eric Malnassy and daughter-in-law Misty Malnassy, both of Austin: and many nieces & nephews. Services will be held Saturday, December 10 @ 2 pm at St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, TX. In lieu of flowers, please offer donations in Phillip's name to NPS-Big Thicket National Preserve at Administrator Officer, Big Thicket National Preserve, 6044 FM 420, Kountze, TX 77625.
