Sgt. Teddy Ratcliff, 48, of Lumberton, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013, at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on April 18, 1965, in Kountze, to Mr. and Mrs. A.P Ratcliff. He was a 1983 graduate of Silsbee High School, a 1992 graduate of Lamar University, and a twenty-four year veteran of the Beaumont Police Department. He had been a resident of Lumberton since 1994. Sgt. Ratcliff served the Beaumont Police Department in various areas, beginning as a patrol officer in 1989. In February 2002, he was awarded the Distinguished Police Service Award. He has been a certified polygraph examiner since August 2002, having graduated from the Texas Department of Public Safety Polygraph Examiners Academy in Austin. He brought honor to the BPD as the valedictorian of his academy class which was comprised of officers from around the United States. Ratcliff was promoted to the rank of sergeant in December 2006. At the time of his death, he was the Personnel Sergeant. The pride he had in his professional accomplishments pale in comparison to the pride he had in his two boys. He was especially proud that both of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and worked many hours alongside them on their projects. Teddy served his sons' scout troop in many capacities and was happy to accompany them on countless weekend campouts and week-long summer camps. He was a respected adult leader of the troop and a positive role model for many of the boys. Teddy will be missed by his wife of twenty-five years, Cheryl Cross Ratcliff; sons, Joshua Blake Ratcliff and Chase Aaron Ratcliff; his wife's parents, Nathan and JoAnn Cross; brothers, Mike Ratcliff and his wife, Penny and Pat Ratcliff and his wife, Jana; brother-in- law, John Cross, Sr. and his wife, Kim; sister-in-law, Amy Rinando and her husband, Vince; nephews, Christopher Ratcliff, Logan Ratcliff, John Cross, Jr., and Nick Rinando; nieces, Candace Ratcliff, Kaitlin Ratcliff, Elizabeth Cross, and Anna Rinando; and many friends in the law enforcement family. Teddy was extremely fond of the girls in his sons' lives, Zoe Kirkland and Holly Garland, and considered them family. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2013, at Woodland Baptist Church, 1860 West Lucas, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 13, 2013, at Woodland Baptist Church, under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A family committal will be at Broussard's Crematorium, Beaumont. Serving as pallbearers will be the following members of the Beaumont Police Department: Lt. Curtis Breaux, Lt. Kenny Spitzer, Lt. John Cross, Sr., Sgt.
