Walter Leon Whitehead,died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 in Jasper, Texas. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 9, 2:00 P.M. at the Jasper Church of Christ, Hwy. 96 South with burial following in the Zion Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 8th from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, Texas. Leon was born to Walter and Ruby Whitehead March 19, 1931 in Jasper, Texas. He graduated from Jasper High School in May of 1950. After graduation, he served 4 years in the United States Navy. Leon returned to Jasper where he worked for the Corp of Engineers and then joined the Texas Highway Department, from where he retired after 42 years. During this time he attended Lamar University where he received his Texas Surveying Certificate. After retiring, he went to work for Mathews Construction Company for a few more years. In addition, he worked many years as a surveyor and preached at Zion Hill Church of Christ, Trout Creek Church of Christ, Warren Church of Christ, and Brookeland Church of Christ. He also taught classes in Austin for the Texas Highway Department. On most Saturdays, in his earlier years, he could be seen at the Jasper Youth Baseball Park where he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for 19 years. Leon was a member of the Jasper Optimist Club and served as deacon in the Jasper Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nannie LaVelle Morgan Whitehead, of Jasper; daughter, Pam Whitehead Smith of Flower Mound; two sons, Sidney Whitehead & wife, Susan of Lumberton and Matthew Whitehead of Brookeland; one daughter- in-law, Sylvia Whitehead of Kirbyville; one sister, Hilda Morgan & husband L.E. Morgan of Port Acres; six grandchildren, Trent Whitehead, Chase May, Brady Whitehead, Shelby Whitehead, Griffin Whitehead, and Justin Whitehead; and numerous friends and family. He is preceded in death by one son, Michael Leon Whitehead; parents, Walter and Ruby Whitehead; two brothers, John Henry (Bucky) Whitehead and Ed Tom Whitehead. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, Jasper Church of Christ Youth Fund, P.O. Box 151, Jasper, Texas, 75951 or the Zion Hill Cemetery Fund, 258 CR 343, Jasper, Texas, 75951.
