William Nicholas Bill Straub William N. Bill Straub, 91, of Groves, died Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Christus St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur. He was born November 26, 1920, in Cleburne, Texas, to Nicholas L. Straub and Ruth (Jackson) Straub. Bill moved to Port Arthur in 1923, where he finished high school at Thomas Jefferson in 1939 and started working for Gulf Oil Corporation as a machinist apprentice. He volunteered in the United States Air Force in May of 1942, serving during WW II, as a mechanic with the 352nd Fighter Group stationed in England. After the war, Bill resumed his work with Gulf Oil Corporation and retired after 39 years, 10 months tenure. He enjoyed studying his Bible, salt-water fishing, woodworking, designing, gardening, and high school monthly luncheons, Silver Sneakers at the YMCA, and many other hobbies and activities. He is survived by his wife of 58 1/2 years, Mary Margia (Erwin) Straub; son, William David Straub of Burkeville, TX.; daughter, Suzanne Straub Barker of Kingwood, TX.; five grandchildren, Natalie Garrison and husband, Michael of Alexandria, Va.; Leslie Straub of Richmond, Va.; Kaci Barker, Tyler Barker and Cody Barker of Kingwood, TX.; sisters, Rosina Laurent and husband, Paul of Livingston, TX., Ruth Iiams of Metro Manila, Philippines; nephews, Jimmy Laurent and wife, Debbie of Livingston, TX., Shep Iiams and wife, Chris of Ione CA., and Bruce Iiams and wife, Nanette of Metro Manila, Philippines and his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, with Dr. Joe Worley and Reverend Charles Miller of First Baptist Church in Groves, officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches. Serving as pallbearers will be: Melvin Lawson, Bart Bragg, Mike Harris, Michael Garrison, Fred Cole, and Thomas Gilchrist. Honorary pallbearers are: Kevin White and Arvin Fails. A visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. The family would like to express their appreciation to Drs. Susan Craig/ Rhonda, Nezar Shobassy, E.Y. Malaty, Joseph Kong and staff, Dr. Thome, St. Mary Hospital and staff, friends, family, neighbors, 352nd Bluenose Fighter Group and Associates, YMCA Silver Sneakers and staff, First Baptist church members for their kind, caring, and concern for Bill during his time of illness.
