Mary Ann Scott, 84, formerly of Beaumont, Texas, died Saturday, March 30, 2012, at Hospital Reina de Los Angeles in La Antigua, Guatemala. Mary was born December 6, 1927, in Belleville, Illinois, to Patricia and Alva Pierce. She spent much of her early life prior to marriage in Evansville, Indiana. A resident of the Beaumont area since the early 1990's, she was a retired neonatal intensive care nurse and school clinic nurse. Mary was an active square dancer and accomplished knitter and crocheter before becoming paralyzed following a brain injury she sustained as a result of a fall in July, 2002. In November of 2011, she moved to La Antigua, Guatemala where she was looked after by her son, Donald Buzzingham and his wife, Linda. She enjoyed her final months surrounded by a loving and caring hospital staff that devoted almost their entire attention to her, their only permanent resident. Mary especially enjoyed the beautiful garden in the central courtyard of the hospital, where flowers were always blooming. A special blessing in her final months in Guatemala was Sasha, a hospital cat, who chose Mary as her favorite human. Survivors include her son, Donald L. Buzzingham and his wife, Linda of La Antigua, Guatemala; brothers and sisters include, Dorothy Mangold and her husband, George, Mildred Osborn, Martin Pierce, Patricia Snodgrass and her husband, Earl, Sharon Stroud and her husband, Jerry and Margaret Voliva, all of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren, Donna Joy Pizzuti and her husband, Sal of West Hills, California, Susan Driever and her husband, Scott of Missouri City, Texas, and Robyn Rife and her husband, Nathan of Missouri City, Texas. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Sydney McIntire of College Station, Nicholas Pizzuti, Costantino Pizzuti, Gianna Pizzuti, Maxwell Driever, and Erik Driever. She was preceded in death by her parents, Patricia and Alva Pierce; her husband, Owen William Scott; and her brother, Herbie Pierce. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 9009 Sienna Ranch Road, Missouri City. Her graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #2, Codigo A-178, P. O. Box 669004, Miami Springs, Florida 33266.
