Walter Ray Overstreet, 86, of Kountze, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at his residence. Walter Ray was born in Nona, Texas, on August 30, 1926, to Arthur Daniel and Viva Wall Youngblood Overstreet. A longtime resident of Kountze, Walter Ray was a true public servant. He was the first paid police officer for the City of Kountze and also served as their Chief of Police. He also served on the city council and was elected Mayor. His last public office was Justice of the Peace of Precinct 3 in Kountze. Walter Ray is survived by his children, Troy Daniel Overstreet of Kountze; Walter Ray Overstreet, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Lake Sam Rayburn; JoAnn Duncan and her husband, Roy, of Kountze; Joe Lynn Overstreet of Kountze; and Kim Tinkle of Pleasure Island; his brother, Joe Overstreet of Kountze; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Overstreet; and his daughter, Sheila Overstreet. A gathering of Walter Ray's family and friends will be held Sunday, March 17, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Broussard's, 530 W. Monroe, Kountze. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Kountze, 100 Monroe, Kountze, with burial to follow at Holland Cemetery, in Kountze.
