Bowling Sr., Chester L. - Thaxton  
Chester Lee Bowling, Sr., 80 of Thaxton, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his residence. He was born on Saturday, Oct. 27, 1934 in Bedford Co., a son of the late Albert Bowling and Verna Zimmerman Bowling. He was retired from the Moneta Dress Factory and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Frances Parker Bowling of 38 years; three daughters, Judy Bowling Agee of Thaxton, Diane B. West and husband, Sammie of Bedford, Melissa Bowling Dishman and husband, Jim of Lynchburg; a son, Chester Bowling of Bedford; a step-daughter, Mary Vickhouse and husband, Larry of Norfolk as well as 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11 am at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Jeane Dunkum officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Olivet Memorial Park at Holy Land USA. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

Brown, Anne L. - Forest  
Anne Lee Brown, 87, of Forest died Monday, May 18, 2015. Anne was born on Feb. 14, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Harold H. Lee and Sally Hargis Lee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother H. Clark Lee and daughter-in-law Liza Brown. Anne is survived by her husband of 63 years, Edward Ryland Brown, Sr.; three sons, E. Ryland Brown, Jr., Orran L. Brown, Sr. (Ellen) and Harold M. Brown; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Hodges, Peggy Brown and Carol Lee; eight grandchildren, Amanda Cocke (Jason), Lindsay Painter (Matt), Orran Lee Brown, Jr. (Chris), Anne Carly Buxton (Garrett), Read Brown, Drew Brown, Jacob Brown (Lemma), and Lucas Brown (Jessica); five great grandchildren, Travis Cocke, Camryn Cocke, Reese Painter, Anne Ryland Brown, Orran Lee Brown III. Anne grew up in her ancestral home, Liberty Hall, in the New London area and within walking distance of New London Academy. After she graduated from New London in 1945, she attended Roanoke College but during her junior year was summoned home by her father to help care for her ailing grandmother. Unable to return to complete her degree, Anne began teaching at Evington Elementary and then became the third and fourth grade teacher at New London Academy. After she and Ryland married in 1952, Anne continued teaching until 1954, when she interrupted her career to fulfill the roles of homemaker and mother of her three sons on the family farm. She frequently served as a substitute teacher at New London Academy, and then resumed work full time in 1968, carefully and patiently teaching reading classes at New London Academy and later at Forest Elementary School. Anne retired from teaching in 1990, after giving the ability to read to thousands of children in Bedford County. She was a loving, devoted and dedicated wife, mother, educator and mentor who lived a full and happy life and whose grace and wisdom will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A graveside service was held May 22, 2015, at Virginia Memorial Park. At the family’s request please consider any of the emergency services in Bedford County for donations. Childress, Russell M. - Bedford  
On May 28, 2015, Russell M. Childress of 6848 Virginia Byway, Bedford, Virginia, passed away after a lengthy period of declining health. He was born on October 13, 1914, in Callaway, Va., to the late James Henry and Ida Webster Childress. He was a sixty plus year member of the Bedford, VA Post No. 54 of the American Legion, and a long-time member of the Ephesus United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Laura T. Childress; one brother, and two sisters. As well as several cousins, Mr. Childress is survived by one son, Warren and his wife, Linda; and one special grandson, William. Mr. Childress was a veteran of World War II, having served with 563rd AAA Battalion of the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations. Most notably, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the Defense of the Remagen Bridgehead, and the Final Allied Force’s Thrust into Germany. He completed his military service as a military policeman, serving in occupied Germany. Russell owned and operated an electrical/plumbing business, serving the Town of Bedford and Bedford County for over fifty years. He thoroughly enjoyed serving his many faithful customers. A service celebrating Russell’s life took place Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. in Tharp Funeral Home’s Bedford Chapel with Rev. Jerry Viemeister and Rev. George Harris officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post #16 and the Army National Guard. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Green Assisted Living of Lynchburg and Seven Hills Hospice for their outstanding care of Mr. Childress during his last days. A special thanks are also extended to several healthcare professionals who cared for Mr. Childress at home prior to his entering assisted living. Downin, Alisha R. - Bedford  
Alisha Renee Downin, 41, of Bedford passed away Monday, May 18, 2015. She was the fiancé of Kevin Furber. Born Nov. 5, 1973, she was a daughter of Landon Knight, and Larri Prosser Knight. Alisha is also survived by the light of her life, her daughter, Brooke Leighann Downin; grandparents: Don and Nellie Knight; sister: Robyn Downin and her fiancé Kevin Coles; niece: Haleigh; nephew: Austin; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Alisha was a very giving person, she loved to help people in any way she could and her life was built around her daughter who she loved very much and was so proud of Brooke’s accomplishments. McClung, Janice A. - Bedford  
Janice Abshire McClung, 76 of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Oakwood Health & Rehab. Center. She was born on Wednesday, March 8, 1939 in McComas, WV, a daughter of the late Greely Alexander Abshire and Mamie Ella Williams Abshire. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church as well as the TOPS Club. She is survived by her husband, Gary Amick McClung, II; a daughter, Sabrina M. Gough of Lynchburg; two sisters, Margola Abshire of Princeton, WV, Shirlene Hawkes of Matoaka, WV and a granddaughter, Ella Gough. Funeral services were held at 3 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Jean Dunkum officiating. A funeral service was also held at 3 PM on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, WV. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

Scott, James D. - Moneta  
James Douglas "J. D." Scott, 69 of Moneta, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at his residence. He was a son of the late Prentiss Glenwood Scott, Sr. and Lucille Frances Robertson Scott. He is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Miller Ferguson-Scott. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 11 am at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford. Interment will follow in Mt. Waldron, Ralph A. - Bedford  
Ralph Andrew Waldron, 89, of Bedford, died Sunday, May 24, 2015. He was born in Roanoke on Dec. 14, 1925. He was the son of the late John and Ernie Catherine Waldron. Mr. Waldron was a Navy Veteran of WWII. He served on LST 682 during the D-Day Landings at Juno Beach. The LST Crossed the English Channel 36 times during the period of invasions. He was employed by the American Viscose and Veterans Administration. Surviving are his two daughters; Debbie W. Carter, husband David, and Jan Waldron, two granddaughters; Elizabeth C. Ellinger, Jennie Potter, husband Shawn, great-grandson; Casey Ellinger, great-granddaughter; Madelyn G. Potter, two sisters; Hazel Harth, Alberta Agnew, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Lucille H. Waldron of 67 years, two sisters; Vera Driskill, Hessie Myers, and two brothers; Melvin and Herman Waldron. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Burch-Messier Walnut Street Chapel, 1235 Walnut Street, Bedford. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke. A Celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Bedford Baptist Church with the Rev. David L. Henderson and Sherrill Michael officiating. Watson, Everette R. - Bedford  
Everette Randolph Watson, 75, of Bedford, died Saturday, May 23, 2015. He was born in Bedford County, to the late Harlan Ashby Watson and Nancy Moseley Watson. Everette was a member of St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church and a retired teacher of the DeSoto County School District, Arcadia Florida. He is survived by his daughter; Amy Watson, son; Matthew Watson, granddaughter; Gabrielle Farina and husband David, brothers; Granville Watson, David Watson, and Mike Camacho, adopted sister; Ethel Spradlin, special niece; Mary L. Watson, and many other nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 27, at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, 631 N Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA.
